Facebook decide to forgo using traditional routing protocols and roll there own using swift and zeroMQ. They aren't the only ones either I believe google rolls their own and if you listen to Russ White on the packet pusher it sounds like LinkedIn uses their Kafka messaging bus to propagate routing info.
